Brevard, NC Information
Brevard is known as "the land of 1,000 waterfalls". It is located in the Western part of North Carolina near the Pisgah National Forest section of the Smokey Mountains. At the center of town (Broad and Main) Brevard's elevation is 2,230 feet. The elevation in Brevard varies from a low of 1,020 feet to 6,025 feet. Annual average precipitation is 68 inches. Population (1990 census) is 5,388. Brevard is the county seat of Transylvania County.
The town was named after Dr. Ephraim Brevard, a Revolutionary War colonel and surgeon. He joined the fight for independence when the British invaded the South. He was taken prisoner at the surrender of Charleston. In front of Brevard City Hall, a monument erected to Dr. Ephraim Brevard by his family declares that the doctor "Fought bravely and died a martyr to that liberty which none loved better and few understood so well."
